Why Narrative Moth …
A moth represents the ability to carry people through confusion and darkness to the light — to truth, to love. Moths are an important metaphor for me because they represent the inner guidance necessary for writing from your heart and not solely from your analytical mind or ego.
For the past seven years, I have been asked to speak from a journalist's perspective about the art of narrative news writing for news organizations and advertising, marketing and PR agencies. For 12 years, I taught news writing and media literacy at area colleges.
As you might imagine, it has been my mission to cultivate and teach the art and craft of narrative nonfiction in a way that serves collective humankind through engaging, enlightening and entertaining. This can be accomplished by personal essays, profiles (personal or organizational), a hero's or heroine's journey to name a few. It can be done in print, digital text, audio and video format.
There are thousands of ways to tell stories. Moreso, there is a real need in the communications industry for the ability to understand and create meaningful nonfiction narratives for clients, entrepreneurs and readers.
Meet Narrative Moth.
To be able to define and create your client's narrative is a skill that isn't taught in advertising or journalism schools, but one that is so incredibly valuable. I have spent a lifetime understanding and sharing because of the profound impact I notice it has on communities. I have watched it take community journalism to another level when we make news human, add a face to the issue at hand and weave in literary devices to create the hero's/heroine's journey. We become part the subject’s quest, big and small. It makes us care.
My narrative nonfiction consulting business isn’t about selling. It’s about serving. You and your clients, readers, consumers. As we collaborate on your narrative, the world will learn the ways you or your clients serve humankind.
